In an effort to prepare for and raise awareness of Earth Day on April 22, the Environmental Club of St. Augustine Preparatory School sponsored the Second Annual “Arts in Earth Day” contest. The students’ response to the competition, which ran from February through April, was exciting, with over 100 entries spanning the five categories: poetry, photography, original artwork, original music lyrics, and theatre. At Mass on Wednesday, April 24, the winners in each category were announced, and each received the supportive cheers of his Hermit brothers. First prize included $50 cash in each category, funded by the club’s Dodgeball Tournament proceeds.
In the poetry category, first prize was awarded to junior Dean Dunleavy (read his poem here), and the two second prizes went to juniors Michael Pallozzi (see entry here) and Henri Danjolli (here). In the photography category, first prize was awarded to freshman, Mark Keller and second prize went to junior Nick Scelso. In the artwork category, first prize was awarded to senior Robert White and second prize to senior John Ruskey (to see the photos and artwork, click here). In the theatre category, first prize was awarded to junior Colin McHugh (read the monologue here). Musc lyrics prize was awarded to sophomore David Carey (here). The winning entries are displayed on the bulletin board outside of Rodio Gym and the winning works will be published in the Prep Literary Arts Club Magazine.
Special thanks to the judges in each category: Ms Elayne Sama, Mrs. Kimberly Wink, Mrs. Lorraine Dutta, Mrs. MaryLou Newnan, and Mr. Stephen Sharp. Mrs. McHugh and the Environmental Club plan to make this an annual event at the Prep.Tags: Arts in Earth Day, Colin McHugh, David Carey, Dean Dunleavy, Henri Danjolli, John Ruskey, Mark Keller, Mike Pallozzi, Nick Scelso, Robert White
